What Are You Prepared to Let Go Of?



“Today is your day to let go of things that no longer serve you.”

This is a good de-clutter statement isn’t it. It could relate to clothing, piles of magazines that you’re never going to read again, sorting through boxes of photos, you know what you need to do! But I get the feeling that this is not what the author of this quote was saying. Yes it helps to clean out everything so that the energy of the house isn’t so blocked up and stagnant, but what about your personal energy. What do you need to let go of in your energetic system to bring back the spring in your step? The spring as in a coiled up wire, or the spring as in the fresh new energy that comes after a winter of feeling cold and shut down. The spring energy that allows us to open up to fresh new possibilities.

However we have to clean out the old first. This could be habits that relate to your health, that you know you need to change. It could be beliefs, that are stuck in the past and holding you back from moving forward. It could be groups that you belong to that have outlived their time. While you stay engaged with them, you don’t have the time to meet up with a new group of people and learn new skills. You will know when the time is right. And what about some of your behaviours like procrastination? Until you can let go of these outdated ways of being, you won’t have space in your energy system to take on any new ‘stuff.’ As the days get longer and we get nearer to spring, have a look at what you can let go of so that you can birth some new ideas, behaviours and people into your life and feel your energy soar.

Can a Pose change Your Happiness?



“Remember, happiness doesn’t depend on who you are or what you have; it depends solely on what you think.” Zig Ziglar

Isn’t this great news! I know it may seem easier to rely on what’s going on out there to give us happiness, but just think about it. If that is the case, we don’t have the same amount of control over the people and events that go on around us. However, if we are the only ones responsible for our own happiness then that is great, because we do have control. It is up to me to monitor and decide what my attitude is going to be in any given moment. I can choose to be like Polyanna and be happy regardless. I can stand up straight, pull my shoulders back and put a smile on my face. This will fool my body into perceiving that it is happy and the resultant hormonal changes will give me that feeling.

I was watching a Ted Talk delivered by Amy Cuddy entitled, “Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are.” In this she talks about the research that shows the hormonal changes in the body can be related to how we hold our body. For a long time the conversation was about how we affect others with our body language but this was talking about how we affect ourselves with our body language. The hormonal changes were measured, with testosterone increasing and cortisol, the stress hormone, lowering. So if we are stressed less, we will think more positively and therefore more happily. In the study the ‘testers’ were asked to hold a pose for 2 minutes only, such as standing with their hands on their hips or sitting upright and hands behind the head. Such a simple thing has such a profound effect. Give it a go and see how it works for you without worrying about trying to change the world around you.

How Are You Going to React?



“How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours.”   Wayne Dyer

You have probably heard others say, “It is not what happens to us but how we react that is important.” If we allow our beliefs to say, “I am a victim, and this behaviour I’m experiencing is what I expect. I don’t have any say about what happens to me. It is ordained by the Universal Intelligence that I will continue to be treated like this. It happened to my parents so therefore it will happen to me again and again. I can’t do anything to change it. This is how it is for our family,” this will become our reality. Look at my last couple of posts to remind yourself of how the universe and our brains operate.

However if we make the decision to learn where those beliefs come from and recognise that the beliefs of our ancestors don’t have to continue into the 21st century, we can start to make changes.  We can choose to react differently because we have a different perspective. We can all choose to believe the scientific evidence that shows us, we can influence our future by changing our thoughts, emotions, beliefs and imagination. Start noticing, how is it I react to things that happen outside of me and how would I like to react? Find another behaviour to have on the ready, to trot out when you next get triggered. I’m not saying it is easy but anything worth doing may need the quality of persistence. We all have the ability. It all comes down to, “Do we want to change?”

The Thinks You Can Think!



“You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate.”   Elizabeth Gilbert.

Unfortunately this will all depend on what your beliefs are. If you believe it is going to be easy to change your thought patterns, it will. If you think it is too hard because you’ve tried in the past and it hasn’t worked, or you’re older and you think ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,’ or you have a belief that everything in life is hard, a struggle, then that is what it will be. The more scientific research they are doing on this concept, the more they are backing up the old quote, “We are what we think.” So what are you thinking as you read this? Whether you agree and believe this to be true or not, science has proven that every thought, feeling or belief you have has a certain frequency that you are putting out into the universe.

What if you were to suspend the scepticism for a while and start being more aware of the thoughts you are having, and whether they are disempowering or empowering. If disempowering, you will probably want to consider changing them to thoughts that are more empowering. I have talked before about the power of gratitude and forgiveness having the power to raise the vibration that is going out into the ether. However our unconscious or subconscious minds are running the show. 90% of decisions made in our lives originate in the subconscious. Do you know what your beliefs are that have been lurking below the surface for most of your life? Sometimes we need a process or help to unearth those, so that they don’t win the battle over the conscious mind that says, “I am choosing different thoughts today!”
